EC Roosevelt Round-Up

Though the school is gone the legend lives on. Go Rough Riders!!!

Sitting here, thinking back to my highschool days and thinking of all the places we had to go and just "hang-out". Ahhhh, the good old days, we can't go back but we'll never forget, well... we made need a boost on the memory thing and that's what this blog is about. Let's add to this list and shake some cobwebs loose as we remember people, places and/or things we did or visited after a day in the dungeon we called Roosevelt High School... Dixon's Delicatessen, Chef Toni's Pizza, Hot Dog John's, Angelo's, Dunkenburger, Christine's Poolroom, the Vogue theatre, Red Top cabs, East Chicago Bowling Lanes, or Candiano's Supermarket. That's a start, someone else dig deep for some and I'll add more later. I'm sure I won't be able to let this go from my mind now that I'm on this track... Oh.. the word "track" reminded me of the South Shore when it went right down the middle of Chicago Ave. Ok, enough from me, your turn.

Hey it's me John. Glad to hear from you. Thanks a bunch for the compliments. I'm glad you are doing well. I'll be checking this site from time to time. Lately I have been busy at work and not had too much time to surf around. Make sure to put some pixs on the page. Then I can say "nice to see you again". Take care, talk to you soon.

Jerry, you mentioned many places that I do not remember but my grad year was 1973. It will be interesting to see what the different age groups remember...

Here go my cobwebs... Growing up in Marktown, I hung out on the school step, at the community center or on the basketball court or on the swings at the park. When going to "town" there was the DQ, Koski and of course friend's homes. We went to the Roller Rink on Gostlin a lot too, thanks to my dad running the kid wagon : )

Great topic, Jerry! Thanks for starting this.

Blessings,
Kim

Ahhhhh, I did a little hangin' out in Marktown also, in fact back in the 60's there were dances held in the old school which I attended even though I didn't dance but as a volunteer to hold up the walls in case that old Rock & Roll music got too wild. Some refered to us as "wall-flowers but we served a purpose in trying to preserve those historic buildings. Many people come to mind as I think back through RHS classmates from Marktown... Burrell(s), Stojanovich(s), Kender(s), Doty(s), Balasz, Villa(s), and on and on the list goes. Great area, great people.

Lets see hmm? Playing as kids around St. Josephs College, eating at College Burger and DQ, Playing strikeout in the giant playground of McKinley then going to either Dublin's or the little store across from St. Stans to get penny candy, playing tag and running around the large playground of Carrie Gosch and going to the little store on Chicago Ave by the Water Tower and getting candy. Getting shoes for school from Kaplans Shoes and gym clothes and gym shoes from AP Davis. Getting my haircut at Ashby's and listening to him tell stories of EC before the streets and houses were built and the wide open area EC was. Also getting those little packages of unmentionables from the vending machine in Puntillo's washroom not knowing what to do with them but having one in your pocket in case you figured it out - LOL. Playing Little League at Club Ki-Yoga, football for the St. Stans, and playing Kiwanas baseball. Hanging out at The Lakefront ,Flat Rock, The Hammond RollerDome, or at the Wicker Park Pool. Watching the break dancers (showing my age) and sneaking into the pool at Koski Park at night. And the best memories I have are hanging out at Roosevelt after playing football or basketball with all my friends and just enjoying the day. Boy the time flies by and I always go back to the statement we have all made at one point of our lives when we didn't get what we wanted as kids - "I can't wait till I graduate and move out!". You ask "Do You Remember?" I tell you I do and when I do it always brings a smile to my face to go back and think of the simpler times when all I worried about was homework and beating my curfew. Thanks for this Jerry it's been fun remembering the GOOD TIMES.

My Pumpkin

I would like to say thank you to everyone for your kind words and thoughts during this difficult time for my family and me. I really appreciate the outpouring of those individuals who was able to attend my mother’s service. My mom was so loved and even though my heart aches of selfishness that she is gone; I know I will miss her terribly; it makes me smile to see all the individuals that joined us for her going home as well as all the cards, flowers and calls received over the past week. Not onl… Continue
